The third topic in this series of design research projects revolves around inflatable structures that can be digitally manufactured. The project stands as a physical visualization of film plastic pollution and how individuals can contribute to the ‘blooming’ and grotesque transformation of an initially beautiful structure. Students use plastic sheets and a CNC cutter and sheet welder to build their project. Passersby are subsequently asked to bring their plastic bags and install them on the outer surface, which recasts the project as a horrific bloom that reminds us of contemporary issues of film plastic.
