2d / 3d Transformation - A Flat Mesh Becomes a Saddle via Tension Membrane

The second iteration on bending-active surfaces explores cell shapes of hexagonal, bow-tie, and arrow-like shapes with different behavior regarding 3d distortion. The meshes can transform into saddles, cylinders, or spherical forms when exposed to lateral forces in opposite directions. The goal of this study is to make a grid shell made of 2” strap steel with all three cell types and to tension the saddle shape with a membrane. The sheet is made of heat shrink film and in combination with the hexagonal mesh creates a hybrid structural system.
